A Nice, Loving Murder
My wife loves to watch crime shows. Our living room is always filled with tales of murder, trials, and justice. And while tragic, the stories themselves can be very interesting. However, there is one thing these shows are always saying that just baffles me.
No matter the case, someone always has to comment on how the victim was "brutally murdered".
Well, I ask you, when was the last time someone was "pleasantly murdered"?
Mentioning that a murder was brutal seems pretty redundant to me. How can it not be? You can not murder with compassion and caring, can you? Just imagine a judge sentencing a convicted killer by saying...
"Well, I know you murdered her, but since you were considerate of her feelings during the process we'll only give you 3 months in prison and a good stiff swat with a ping pong paddle. Just don't be doing it again, OK? Do we have a deal? Come on now, pinky swear."
Don't be ridiculous! All murders are brutal, there's no other way they can be. I don't care what weapon or method is employed or how many times it is used, if you're killing someone, that's brutality.
I feel the same way about the whole "hate crime" thing. We have laws assigned to give people extra punishment if they commit violent acts because of hate.
Well again, I ask you, how can you be violent without hatred?
It's redundant and stupid. Assault, battery, and murder are illegal. Yet, "hate crimes" seek to somehow make it even more illegal if the state can prove you hated the person whom you assaulted, battered, or murdered?
Who comes up with these stupid ideas? Can you tell me that anyone who assaults, batters, or murders is doing it with love and kindness in their heart?
Come on! It's all a hate crime, all the way around, always was, always will be. If you want to give stiffer penalties for these crimes, go ahead, do it. But why segregate out one murder as a "hate crime" and another murder as not? Because if you're going to label some things as "hate crimes" then you must be implying there are other crimes that are not hateful?
Which would make them what, love crimes?
"I loved her so much, that I suffocated her with my Twinkie wrapper. Because, you see, I love Twinkies, too, and it just seemed fitting."
"Oh, it's OK then, we understand. We'll find you 'not guilty by reason of Twinkie indulgence'. You are free to go."
It's dumb. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Or should I be redundant, too, and call it stupidly dumb? Will that make any difference?
Another thing I find ridiculous is when criminals are given more than one life sentence.
"He was given 5 life sentences, each without the possibility of parole."
So what, after he dies you're going to throw him back into his cell until he dies 4 more times? Have fun waiting.
Maybe I just don't understand the difference.
So, perhaps if someone could find a brutal, hate crime murderer currently serving his 4th life sentence and string him up next to a nice, loving murderer for comparison, then maybe I'd understand the difference.
Who knows? Until then, it all seems dense, dim-witted, and stupidly dumb to me.
